My name is Kata Kerényi, and I live in Budapest, Hungary with my 4 dogs — three Border Collies and a border-mix. I hope my next-door neighbors don’t read this blog…because they know only about two dogs. I live in a veritable blockhouse in which only two dogs are allowed, so I’m careful to keep up appearances. Fortunately, all Border Collies look alike and my neighbors only get to see two black-and-white canines at a time. It works, so please, keep my secret!
We started disc dogging about two years ago, but I didn’t realize at all what I was doing. I saw a canine disc-presentation in Germany at a dog show, and I thought this is cool looking, I’ll try it. So I bought some discs in a pet shop, and started to use them for my musical freestyle presentations. One of my best friends saw us once and informed me that there were actually disc dog competitions. So I became the first dog-disc-freestyler in Hungary without even knowing it…
Today dog-disc, as we call it, is a pretty popular sport in my country. And I’m a competitor now, though not for a long time. But we’ve had some good results so far. This year I qualified for the Hyperflite Skyhoundz World’s in Pairs Freestyle. But dog-disc is just one part of our life. We also do some other activities, like herding, canine musical freestyle, agility and obedience. We frequently give presentations about positive dog-training that are seen by the whole country courtesy of a very receptive Hungarian media. This is another good way to charm your neighbors — just pop up in their favorite TV-shows, and you’ll become a star! All of my dogs have their own specialties, so my life isn’t at all boring, though sometimes I dream of what life might be like if I had a big, lazy Saint Bernard.
